Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask before they begin

Reaching out can feel like a big step. Here are honest answers to the things people most often want to know about how we work, what it costs and what to expect.

Getting started

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

If you’re capable and dependable on the outside but quietly exhausted, overthinking everything and unsure how to put your own needs into words, you’re exactly the kind of person we work with. You don’t need to be in crisis to come to therapy. Often it begins with a sense that something is no longer working, even if you can’t yet name what.

What’s the difference between counselling, supervision and coaching?

They can overlap, but each has a different focus. Counselling looks inward: understanding your past, how it shapes your present and the beliefs you’ve come to hold about yourself. Supervision is for people who support others professionally: a space to unpack the weight you carry from that work. Coaching is the most action-focused: it works in the here and now, clarifying what you want and taking practical steps towards it. If you’re not sure which fits, we can talk it through and find the right starting point together.

How do I get started?

Complete our short intake form, or call 07719 567556. We’ll be in touch within two working days to talk through what you’re looking for and match you with the counsellor best placed to help.

Can I choose which counsellor I see?

Yes. Tell us about any preferences on the intake form, and we’ll recommend the person whose experience and approach best fit what you’re looking for.

Will I be working with Maria?

You can. Maria is our lead counsellor and works with a number of clients herself, at £90 per session. Sessions with our team counsellors are £65. You’re welcome to ask for Maria specifically.

Are your counsellors qualified and registered?

Yes. Every counsellor in our team is a BACP registered member. We’re all qualified, insured and working within the BACP Ethical Framework, and we each receive regular clinical supervision. Maria Morgan, our founder and lead counsellor, is BACP registered member 386878.

What if the fit doesn’t feel right?

Tell us. The relationship matters more than anything else in counselling, and we’ll find you someone who suits you better, with no awkwardness.

Do you work in person or online?

Both. We have our own rooms in Newtownabbey, a bank of counsellors working from their own private studios across Northern Ireland, and secure video sessions. Some people like to switch between the two depending on what’s going on in their week.

Do you offer counselling for children and young people in Newtownabbey?

Yes. Our team counsellors work with children and young people from primary school through to secondary school, at our rooms in Glengormley, Newtownabbey. Sessions are £65. You can find out more on our children and young people page.

How long will I need to come for?

It depends on what you bring and what you need. We agree the pace and length of counselling together, and some people come for a few months while others stay longer. You are never locked in. We review how things are going together, and you stay in control of the pace and length of the work.

How long is a session, and how often will we meet?

Sessions are usually 50 minutes, weekly. Longer sessions can be discussed if that would better suit your needs, and fortnightly sessions are available on request, at a rate confirmed on enquiry.

What working together is like

Do you offer CBT?

Yes. Our counsellors are trained in a range of approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, person-centred and relational counselling, somatic and trauma-informed practice, systemic work, creative and play-based therapy for children, and neuro-affirming counselling. We’ll talk with you about which approach suits what you’re working through.

Do you offer EMDR therapy near Belfast?

Yes. EMDR is available at our rooms in Glengormley, Newtownabbey, a short journey from Belfast. Sessions are £90 to £150. You can find out more on our EMDR therapy page.

What actually happens in a session?

We work across three connected threads: the relational (the patterns in your relationships, past and present), the somatic (what your body is telling you, and learning to feel safe in it) and the systemic (the family, culture and history you come from). In practice that looks like honest conversation, noticing what happens in your body, getting curious rather than self-critical, and gently making sense of why you do what you do. It is led by you, not by a script. And nothing needs to be wrong for therapy to be worthwhile: it can be as much about growth and self-understanding as about working through difficulty.

I’ve had therapy and read all the books, and still feel stuck. Can you help?

This is one of the most common things we hear. Many people understand themselves brilliantly on paper, but knowing a pattern intellectually and feeling it shift are two very different things. Our work is less about learning more, and more about the process of unlearning, and of letting yourself be met rather than analysed.

Do you work with neurodivergence?

Yes. We offer neuro-affirming counselling. Many of the people we work with have spent a lifetime feeling slightly different or never quite fitting in. For some, neurodivergence is part of that picture, and it is something we can explore openly and without judgement, whether or not you have a formal diagnosis. We don’t diagnose, but we work with the way your brain is wired, not against it.

Is everything I share confidential?

Yes. What you bring is held in strict confidence, in line with the BACP Ethical Framework. There are a small number of legal and safeguarding situations where we would be required to act, for example where there is a serious risk to your safety or someone else’s, and we will always talk these limits through with you at the outset. As part of good practice, our counsellors discuss their work in confidential clinical supervision, where you would never be identifiable.

What if I need to pause or take a break?

You are not locked in. If life gets in the way, or you simply need to step back for a while, breaks can be offered and there’s no pressure. Where it suits you, we can also explore walking sessions outdoors. Sometimes moving and being outside opens things up in a different way.

Fees and practical details

How much does counselling cost?

Sessions with one of our counsellors are £65, including counselling for children and young people. Sessions with Maria, our lead counsellor, are £90, with block bookings of 8, 12 or 16 sessions at a reduced rate. EMDR is £90 to £150 per session. Block bookings are also available with our team counsellors; ask us for rates. A limited number of reduced-rate places may be available for people in financial hardship.

Why is coaching priced differently from counselling?

Because they’re genuinely different pieces of work. Counselling is depth work within a clinical, therapeutic framework, usually over the longer term. Coaching is forward-focused and results-oriented, often for leaders and high achievers where the work is tied to their professional direction. Neither is more valuable than the other; they’re different investments for different needs. You’ll find the full coaching rates on the coaching page.

Do you offer life coaching online?

Yes. Life coaching is available online, wherever you are in the world. It starts with a free 20-minute discovery call, and full details are on our coaching page.

What’s your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange a session. Where a session is cancelled with less notice and we’re unable to reschedule within the same week, a 50% charge applies. Cancellations within 24 hours of the session are charged in full. Life happens, and we can always talk things through.

How do I book and pay?

We use a booking app that lets you arrange your sessions and pay in one place. Your first session is paid in advance, and weekly sessions are each paid in advance too.

For supervisees and organisations

Are you taking on supervisees?

Yes. We supervise qualified therapists in private practice as well as students and trainees on placement. Individual supervision is £90 to £120 per 90-minute session, and trainee supervision is £45 per hour. Read more on the supervision page, or complete the supervision intake form.

Do you offer external supervision for organisations?

Yes. We provide external clinical supervision for organisations with in-house therapists or counsellors, offering an independent space outside the organisation’s own structures. Consultancy and group arrangements are priced on request.

Can you supervise leaders who aren’t therapists?

Yes, and it’s some of the work Maria finds most energising. We offer reflective, non-clinical supervision for people in people-facing and leadership roles who carry real responsibility and want somewhere thoughtful to process the weight of it. Maria’s own background in business and leadership means she genuinely understands that terrain.

Do you offer group supervision?

Yes, on request. Group supervision and consultancy are priced individually depending on the size of the group and what you’re looking for.

Does supervision meet BACP requirements?

Yes. Supervision for qualified counsellors and therapists is designed to meet BACP requirements, while going beyond compliance.

Is supervision available online?

Yes, by secure video anywhere in the UK and Ireland, or in person in Newtownabbey.

Do you offer counselling in schools?

Yes. We provide counselling for pupils from P1 through to secondary school, with specialised academic-year concession rates for schools. Find out more.

Do you rent rooms to other practitioners?

Yes. Our rooms in Newtownabbey are available to private practitioners, group work and holistic practitioners whose work suits a calm, therapeutic setting. Availability and rates on enquiry.
